Given the Safer Internet Day 2012 theme of Connecting Generations, we ask whether, instead of imposing restrictions, parents can support their child’s internet safety by sharing a positive experience of internet use with them.

An analysis of parental mediation in the EU Kids Online survey of 25,142 9-16 year olds in 25 countries shows that restrictive mediation reduces online risks, but it also reduces their online opportunities and skills. The new analysis in this report shows that when parents actively mediate their child’s internet use, this too is associated with lower risk and, most important, lower harm. However, parental active mediation of use is linked to more (not fewer) online activities and skills.

Read the full EU Kids Online report here.

BETT is an educational trade show held annually in London that is focused on bringing together educational suppliers and professionals to showcase and evaluate educational technology products, resources and best practice. Robyn will be participating in a panel discussion at a seminar facilitated by David Wright from the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) UK, titled “Are UK schools healthy when it comes to online safety?” The presentation and subsequent conversation aim to show how UK schools compare with international schools regarding online safety, using data gathered by the 360 Degree Safe tool. Follow discussion on Twitter #LearnLiveBU18.
The ISTE Conference: Unlocking Potential will be held in Philadelphia this weekend. It will be worth following #iste11 on Twitter. I am facilitating the presentation of Generation Safe™ in an ISTE Session with Marsali Hancock (CEO of IKeepSafe US) and David Wright from the South West Grid for Learning UK. It is a hands-on opportunity for principals and teachers to experience this unique system of interactive online tools designed to integrate digital technology into existing whole school initiatives in any community or country. Because student experiences online affect school climate, Generation Safe™ teaches schools how to build their own network of support for all stakeholders in their digital environment—administrators, teachers, school counselors, network administrators, technology and media specialists, public health and medical professionals (e.g., school nurse), resource officers, parents and students. Generation Safe™ promotes prevention, detection, bystander awareness, intervention and reporting of digital incidents. The school learns how to engage the best stakeholders on site and in their community to increase positive outcomes in any cyber situation and to minimize civil and criminal litigation.

This thought provoking video won the What’s Your Story? video competition 2011. Titled ‘Where are you?’ it was created by Mark C Eshleman and features Tyler Joseph. The contribution of young people to the conversation about what it means to be a respectful, responsible and ethical digital citizen is a significant perspective expressed not only in words but through their medium: media. What opportunities do you provide young people in your school to be partners in the education process?

This exciting project is a community lead project managed by Ms Lee Baxter, Senior Programs Officer from Student Wellbeing & Drug Education, DEECD and Ms Francis Browne, Operational Leader, Bendigo Catholic Education Office. The Loddon Mallee Cyber safety Project has a steering committee comprised of local representatives from the following groups, LM Regional Office DEECD, Catholic Education Office, Victoria Police, School Focused Youth Service, Central Victorian Technology Business, CentaCare, Telstra CountryWide, LM Region Secondary and Primary Schools.

The Loddon Mallee Cybersafety Project has been funded by the Telstra Foundation Community Cybersafety Grants and includes three main components:

Analysis and Investigation: Surveying of students, teachers, and parents, to examine factors related to cybersafety such as internet usage, monitoring and control of internet use, problem use, compulsive use, cyber bullying, legal issues.

Training: Professional development of key stakeholder leadership, community education through community based forums, curriculum development, and

Resources: Peer education resource development

This report forms the analysis and investigation component of the survey, and is designed to give the community specific feedback about cybersafety in their schools and homes. A sample of schools from the Bendigo, Kerang and North Central, and Mildura Areas were invited in 2009 and 2010 to participate in the analysis and investigation component of the LM Cybersafety Project. For those schools participating in the analysis and investigation component, all students from grade 4 to year 12, and all school parents and teachers of grade 4 to year 12 were invited to complete the online survey.

This is the Bendigo Community Region report and was prepared by Dr Sophie Reid with the support of Ms Sylvia Kauer and Ms Robyn Treyvaud.
