Contents

Navigating Cyber Environments Safely With today’s digital tools anyone can create and communicate with a global audience. Are students being prepared for a world in which they have that kind of power and responsibility? They may be facile users of the technologies, but do young people have the necessary knowledge and skills to take best advantage of Web 2.0? And do teachers and parents understand the landscape young people are exploring and enjoying?
Content includes video and booklets from the Australian Federal Police.

In this section every 21stC tool is explained simply, together with strategies to discuss and monitor use safely. Find out what kids are doing online in My Space, Face Book, Blogs, Chat Rooms, virtual worlds, instant messaging; what electronic and web games they play and how mobiles are becoming their communication hub.

Find out about the legal and regulatory framework that governs online crime to protect your family and students: hacking, scams, illegal pornography, predators and other threats to security online.
Digital Literacies Digital Literacies can be defined as the ability to ‘read’ and understand visual, aural and digital codes: the Internet, games, mobile telephones and other technologies that incorporate media, interactivity and information.

The myth we as teachers and parents constantly hear …

‘Children and teenagers are naturally media and digitally literate. It’s their world. They know how to navigate it and how to deal with it.’

Not true!

Although young people may be technology savvy from a young age, they are not digitally literate. They may know how to use remote controls, mobile phones, search the Internet, create their own blog or upload onto YouTube but, just as they need to learn to speak, read and write English and to learn the language of media, they also need to be taught how to read and analyse digital messages.
Developing Cyber Safe School Communities Cyber safety and ethics, Addiction, Bullying, Security, Rules, Reporting, teaching units, research and video case studies for students, parents and their children to view and discuss.
